How do biological molecules self-organize into specialized structures that perform specialized functions? Oocyte extracts, my research focuses on understanding how nanometer scale molecular motor proteins collective organize microtubules into structures on the micron and millimeter length scales. By combining quantitative microscopy, microfluidics, biochemistry, simulation, and analytical modeling we can both build models of this self-organizing behavior and test them quantitatively.

Our overall goal is to combine a variety of experimental and theoretical approaches to find general principles that help to explain the structure, behavior and evolution of cells and organisms. Welcome to the Quantitative Biology Lab! Our goal is to elucidate the biochemical and biophysical principles that underlie the self-organization and scaling of subcellular organelles. Each cellular organelle carries out a distinct function, which is not only related to its molecular composition, but in many cases also to its size. The mitotic spindle for example must be large enough to span sufficient distance to physically separate chromosomes into two opposite halves of the cell. We love what we do.
